Anxiety in your Child: Strategies for helping kids overcome worry, fear and panic

Our kids are suffering from anxiety in record numbers. One in fourteen young Australians (6.9%) aged 4-17 experienced an anxiety disorder in 2015. This is equivalent to approximately 278,000 young people. When we look at mental ill-health more generally, the numbers double to about one in seven primary school kids and one in four adolescents. Resilience levels decline as our kids get older. Fears and worries become a dead weight our kids can’t lift. Our children are enduring panic attacks, stress, and we are watching their confidence levels drop.

Parents want, so badly, to help. But they often don’t know how. And sometimes their well-intended attempts to help only hurt. In this presentation parents will learn more about the drivers of anxiety in our children and what we can do to help our young people.

Dr Justin Coulson is the co-host and parenting expert on Channel 9's "Parental Guidance", the founder of happyfamilies.com.au, and one of Australia’s most trusted parenting experts.

Over the past decade he has helped innumerable families with his 6 books about raising children, his hundreds of media appearances (including all of Australia’s major news outlets, and even the Washington Post and the New York Times), and two viral videos that have been viewed a combined 80 million times! Justin earned his PhD in Psychology from the University of Wollongong. He and his wife Kylie have been married since the late 1990’s and are the parents of 6 daughters.
