Victorian Early Years Awards Finalists
Sep 2018

The Geelong College Early Learning Team have been shortlisted as a finalist forThe Emeritus Professor Collette Tayler Excellence in Educational Leadership Award category at the 2018 Victorian Early Years Awards!

Nominations in this category celebrate outstanding achievement in leadership and approaches to further developing learning and teaching practices.

"Having a Learning Project that brings all classes, teachers and parents together has benefited our learning in so many ways. We have created a collaborative culture, where everyone’s voices are respected. Team planning meetings include leadership contribution, and the sharing and interpretation of documentation. This is a powerful way of reflecting on our intentional teaching, and our training in Harvard University’s Cultures of Thinking and Growth Coaching has assisted with the development of a consistent pedagogy across our whole service.

Some of the actions from our project included the development of a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) which was the first for our school. We initiated the recognition of Sorry Day at our school, and the celebration of National Reconciliation Week at Junior School.

Our project culminated in the sharing of the thinking and learning of all EL children to create a ‘Children’s Acknowledgment of Country’, now proudly shared daily in the EL classrooms and at all official Junior School gatherings. Connection with Country is embedded through all the nature play, Bush Kinder and outdoor learning children are involved in.

We have shared our learning with our school community and other Early Childhood professionals throughout our region. Our parents have appreciated the teaching of Aboriginal history and culture to children and recognise the importance of this. Staff now have confidence and knowledge to continue this intentional teaching in a centre wide consistent approach."

The Hon. Jenny Mikakos MP, Minister for Early Childhood Education, will announce the winners of the 2018 Victorian Early Years Awards at an awards ceremony late October. It is wonderful to see Early Childhood education being valued by the wider community, and our team are great advocates for the importance of high quality early education.

I am sure you will join us in wishing them the best of luck!
