Masters of Sports Coaching update
Peter Blanchfield is a teacher and Director of Rowing at The Geelong College. He is currently undertaking a Masters of Sports Coaching | May 2019

Current Unit – High Performance Program Management for Coaches

Although not the most appetising of unit titles, this current component for my ongoing learning addresses the nuts and bolts of developing and managing sports programs.  The online and external course through the University of Queensland connects coaches, teachers and managers across the country to develop our structures and processes of our own sporting programs.

I have enjoyed the opportunity to:

  • Share and review coaches’ initiatives in developing their own sporting programs;
  • Review case studies of Discrimination and Coach Resignations or Termination of Contracts in elite sport; and
  • Analyse the NBA (National Basketball Association) and MLB’s (Major League Baseball) mission statements and how they affect franchises in those sports.

It is a wonderful opportunity to further my education in sport’s administration while connecting with people throughout Australia who are working with adolescent athletes.  There is a great relationship with the learning resources from my studies and my Unit 1 & 2 Physical Education class as well as our College’s Rowing Program.

For practical application from this professional learning, the College’s team of rowing coaches is currently reviewing our coaching framework for all students who elect to cox and row.  Our outcome of this process will see more clear and SMART goals being set for our coxswains and rowers while benefitting our young coaching group who are preparing for the 2019/2020 rowing season.
